A coupon for a free DVD rental from the Mission Viejo Library will be given away (one per family) for each used telephone book dropped off at the Mission Viejo Library on Wednesday. April 22, 2009, Earth Day. The Friends of the Mission Viejo Library are raising money to purchase new children's materials through the April Waste Management Recycle Drive and your old telephone book counts. Waste Management of Orange County will donate $5 for every ton of recycle material collected during the month of April. Drop-off times are 10:00 am to 9:00 pm., in the library. Support the Mission Viejo Library and be green.

Thie "Green for Yellow" phone book drive kicks off the City of Mission Viejo's Third Annual Artes de la Vida and Earth Day Celebration to take place on Saturday, April 25, 2009. The annual planting activity takes place from 8:00 am to 10:00 am and Artes de la Vida and Earth Day Celebration continues from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on the Village Green at Oso Viejo Park.

Astronomy at the Mission Viejo Library is part of the 2009 International Year of Astronomy, hosted by Scopes-4-Schools, Inc., and the Mission Viejo Library, this free event will be fun and educational for the entire family.

Astronomy at the Mission Viejo Library begins at noon on Friday, April 3, 2009, with live webcast interviews with astronomers from leading observatories around the world. The event continues until 9:00 pm that evening. On Saturday, April 4, 2009,. the program begins at noon with viewing of the sun through solar telescopes. The program concludes at 11:00 pm with a star gazing party.

Re-careering Bootcamp workshops full, but similar topics on tap in near future

The free workshops on March 24, 31 are designed to help people craft effective resumes and master the art of interviewing. They listed the top 10 books respondants lied about reading. Granted, the survey was limited to the UK, but the library has most of these books if you want to catch up on your reading.

New Limit on Number of Requests

The library has become more popular than ever which is shown in how many items that checkout. And with this increase of use, we’ve had to decrease the number of holds that can be placed. Now, people can place a maximum of five items on reserve at one time. There are some items that people can not place on hold, like the Rental DVDs and Book Club Kits. But pretty much everything else in the library can be requested.

Library users are encouraged to place their own reserves on the library’s PAC’s (Public Access Catalog) or remotely via the library’s web site, www.cmvl.org. A current library card is required along with a PIN number (last four digits of telephone number) is needed to do this.

Learn How to Download ebooks and eaudiobooks for free at the Mission Viejo Library's

DIGITAL BOOKMOBILE DOWNLOAD EVENT on
Sunday, February 22, 2009
from Noon to 5 p.m.
in the Mission Viejo Library Parking lot

The Mission Viejo Library will host the Digital Bookmobile, an immersive download experience inside a 74-foot, high-tech tractor-trailer. Readers of all ages are invited to engage digital downloading through interactive demonstrations and experience the Mission Viejo Library’s audiobook and eBook download service at this free event. Visitors will receive a coupon for a free library DVD rental. Library card holders can also check out and download digital titles any time by visiting the Internet Branch on the library’s website http://www.cmvl.org/ or linking directly to the Southern California Digital Library.

The Digital Bookmobile is housed inside an 18-wheel tractor-trailer. This 74-foot community outreach vehicle is a high-tech update of the traditional bookmobile that has served communities for decades. The vehicle is equipped with broadband Internet-connected PCs, high definition monitors, premium sound systems, and a variety of portable media players, all of which help visitors explore the Mission Viejo Library’s download service. Interactive learning stations give visitors an opportunity to search the digital media collection, use supported mobile devices, and download and enjoy eBooks and audiobooks from the library.

Patrons can take advantage of the download service 24/7 when they visit the library’s website. From there, they can browse the growing collection of best-selling, new release, and classic titles, and check out a digital title with a valid library card. Once downloaded, digital titles can be enjoyed on a computer or transferred to supported mobile devices. Many audio titles can also be burned to audio CD. At the end of the 14 day lending period, titles will automatically expire and are returned to the digital collection. There are never late fees or damaged items.

Amid all the political news and celebrations the past couple days, there was a literary anniversary last Monday, January 19th. That day was Edgar Allan Poe's 200th birthday. He was born in Boston in 1809 and died 40 years later in 1849. As one of the most influential American writers, it seems fitting to mention that his books of poems and short stories are constantly being checked out from the library.

Let the information come to you

In the early days of the Internet, before Google, people had to search and hunt for useful web sites. There were books like the Internet Yellow Pages (which in a way is the ultimate in technology ridiculousness) and people would have scores of bookmarked pages as their browser favorites. In the library world, we would memorize sites like we would reference books. Remembering the URL of a page, and knowing what was on it was just as good as knowing what was on the shelves of books.

But now there are billions of pages of information. Things are being created all the time and information is changing faster than anyone can image. To compensate a little for this quickness, there are now tools that cull information and lump it all together for users. One tool which is very useful is the simple email program. Many places (like the library) offer email newsletters, which are sent out periodically. So if its a daily cartoon, stock quotes, weather reports or whatever sent to your email, those are pages you don't need to remember or bookmark. They just arrive in your email inbox.

Some of the more fun ways of getting information sent to is by receiving emails alerts. This is different than the newsletters because as soon as the information is found, it is sent to you. Google has an alert system that will send you mail that contain any words you select. It could come from a blog, video, web page or news story. So if there is a specific thing you search for all the time, you can create a Google alert and just have the data mailed to you. Most news web sites and blogs have email alerts available, so you just need to sign up with each source individually. An email alert system that's a little closer to home is the notification systems the library uses. We have the ability to setup emails for when your holds come in and also when your checked out items come due. To set this up, you would need to talk to our Circulation Department stationed at the Checkout Desk in the library.

Another slick way to compile information from many different websites is using something called RSS. If a web page is configured to setup RSS, than a user can "subscribe" to the page using an RSS Reader. Also called Feed Readers, or Aggregators, these tools can be either web based or programs installed on your computers hard drive. Newer browsers from Internet Explorer, FireFox and Chrome have readers integrated into them. Also, email programs like Outlook have Feed Readers as features. A couple of the web based RSS Readers are called Bloglines, MyYahoo, and Google Reader. All of these tools are designed to collect data from web pages you select.

Getting Your Kids to Read, and Keeping Them Reading

Parents are invited to attend a special free workshop presented by professional educators from “Teaching with E’s”, on Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at 6:30 pm in the Mission Viejo Library Heritage Room. Parents will hear, first hand, how to keep their child interested in reading and how to help them select appropriate books for their reading level, as well as how to participate in activities to promote lifelong reading habits. For a new year, we have a new number one requested book. Twilight is no longer top of the list. With 21 copies of Twilight circulating, that means that the holds list for that book is pretty quick. Also, for the first time, a nonfiction book made the list. Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell is on the list. Some titles that have fallen off the list include Brisingr and The Shack.

Online Resources Part II

I mentioned in the email newsletter article that knowing which database to use was half the battle to find good information. Also, its not a question of not only knowing which tool, but how to use the tool you selected. Some online sources are ebooks. (Electronic versions of reference books that the library most likely has in hard copy.) So when you look up something online using one of these tools, you can find an exact copy, words and pictures, of the information in a printed book. Examples from our collection include Grzimek's Animal Life Encyclopedia and the Middle Ages Reference Library.

Other sources are kind of a hybrid, some information is only available online while other parts are reprinted from reference books. So these types of resources are databases which contain the articles from many different reference works. For example, the Biography Resource Center contains articles from many different types of sources that contain biographical entries. Consequently, this is a fantastic tool to start with if you are doing any research on a person, from the earliest of recorded history to the most current pop idol.

Another resource I would put in the category is the Literature Resource Center which has entries from a veritable alphabet soup of different sources. (CLC, TCLC, SC, NCLC...) All of which have reviews and criticisms from reference books online for people to access.

Our ProQuest database is very focused and contains the Orange County Register and Los Angeles Times only. But there is a unique twit to this one. The default search looks at both the Times and Register going back to the mid-1980s. But if you want to go way back using the Los Angeles Times Historical Database, you need turn off searching the current articles and select specifically the historical archive, which isn't very intuitive for people use to a Google type search.

And the two most unique online resources we have which isn't geared for children are the Learning Express Test eBooks and Online Practice and the Overdrive down-loadable books, which I'll talk about next time.

Librarians Are Hiding Something

Magazines, or as we librarians call them, periodicals traditionally have been a large part of any library collection. We subscribe to dozens of titles and we put most of them out for people to just pickup and read. And as long as it is not the current issue, you can check out magazines. But there are some magazines that we hide away from you.

But to be fair, we're not hiding the magazines because we want to keep people from reading them. Rather, we had to hide the magazines to protect them. In the deep, dark corners of the library, sometimes our materials get vandalized. And magazines and newspapers are very susceptible. So for their safety, here is a list of magazines that are kept at the reference desk.

LiveScan Fingerprinting Service

Beginning today, LiveScan fingerprinting services will be available at the Mission Viejo Library, which is now a certified provider of the process.

LiveScan is a digital fingerprint submission transmitted electronically to the California Department of Justice. LiveScan is an automated service for criminal history background checks that may be required as a condition of employment, licensing, certification, foreign adoptions, volunteering and such.

LiveScan fingerprinting service will be offered by appointment during library hours every Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday.

The fingerprint rolling fee is $20; payable to the library. Additional fees may apply depending upon the level of service the requesting agency or employer requires.

Whistling in the Dark
For the library blog statistics are kept on how many people visit the site. You can see these for yourself by going to the bottom of the window and click on the little white "sitemeter" graphic. The statistics say we average about 4 visitors per day. That not really too many of you. Hopefully we'll be able to raise this number by providing more reasons to come here. Where in the library?

I know you all understand how the library works. We have books and things for people to come in and checkout. After a couple weeks, they return the item and we put it back on the shelf for the next person. It’s a great system that has been working for libraries for the past couple centuries.

But there has always been a problem with this system. From the days if index card catalogs to our modern computerized catalog, how do you know where the item is located in the building?

Well, for your benefit, I’ve labeled a map of the library with all the various areas and codes showing their location. But before we get there, let’s review some of the things we librarians take for granted.

First off, everything has a call number. So when you look at the catalog, make sure you notice the Call No. column. Abstractly, the library collection is broken up into two areas - Fiction and Non-fiction. Fiction usually has a name or title attached as a call number while non-fiction for the most part uses the good ol’ Dewey Decimal System for its call numbers. So don’t be confused when a call number doesn’t have an actual number in it.

Also, to make things still more confusing, some call numbers might be exactly the same, but the collection might be different. These areas I've labeled with blue text. If you want to know more about these, drop me a line and I’ll try and explain it to you.

Dr. Lyle received the Macavity Award for his non-fiction books, Murder and Mayhem, Forensics for Dummies, Forensics and Fiction, Forensics: A Guide for Writers as well as the thrillers, Devil’s Playground and Double Bind. Dr. Lyle will be signing his books at the end of the program.
